I was in the process of upgrading the UCM firmware from 7.008 to 7.016 when it failed. Whether it was a coincidence or not I am not sure, but I've not been able to connect to the UCM since. There is a connection to the ETH02 via Device Explorer, which all looks fine, but I cannot connect to the UCM via Comfigurator. The green D10 LED is lit, but the red D9 isn't
I am running firmware 7.024 on the main Comfort II board and do not have any other upgradeable UCMs.
Any ideas? Could the firmware have corrupted and, if so, is there anyway of updating it?

The IP connection may have been lost during the upgrade
If you did not reset the UCM or remove power you should be able to do the upgrade again
If Green D10 is lit but D9 red is not, it means that the UCM is not being polled
What is the ID of the UCM? is it 1 or 2
Can you try the upgrade again?

I've attempted to upgrade again, but continue to get the same 'No response from UCM' message. In addition to D10 being lit and D9 not the RDY, BUSY, BUSY2 and ERR lights are also on permanently. The UCM ID is 1.
I seemed to think that I should be able to upgrade direct from a PC, but can only see the programming cable option now in Comfigurator.

Can you describe exactly how you tried to upgrade the firmare?
Was it by programming cable? or other method
In Comfigurator 3.6 Transfer menu only has Upgrade by cable
If your UCM is version 6 and above, upgrade firmware in the Modules Tab right click and select "Check for Updates" to upgrade UCM firmware to the latest from the server
If you used the programming cable to upgrade, use the same method again

I used Comfigurator 3.6.8 and selected the modules tab as you describe. I have used this method several times before and not had any problems, other than the occasional fail, but it has always worked when I have then tried again.
If I try to connect via Comfigurator now I get the 'Failed to connect to UCM' error every time.
I am in the process of ordering an additional UCM with RS485 plug in. Will I be able to plug the ETH02 module into the new UCM and use that with a programming cable to reload firmware onto the corrupt board?

Which UCM you are trying to connect to with the Comfigurator software?
"Failed to connect to UCM" means that Comfigurator is unable to establish connection to the UCM (UCM/USB or UCM/ETH).
Most of the times this is because the connection setting (under Options menu >> Settings >> UCM Connection) has changed.
If you are using UCM/USB ensure that the serial number of the USB is selected from the drop-down list.
If you are using UCM/ETH ensure that the IP address and port settings match the UCM/ETH.
What type of UCM are you ordering?
The UCM with RS485 plug-in module is most likely of Universal UCM type and the UCM used for firmware upgrading is of General type.
So if your order is UCM/Universal then you will not be able to upgrade other corrupted UCM by simply replacing the RS485 with ETH02 plug in module.

I am trying to connect the UCM/Eth02 to Comfigurator. The firmware upgrade was underway, but it failed and I have double checked the settings once again and they are fine.
I am buying UCM with RS485, which I can see from your note below cannot be used to reload firmware onto the UCM/Eth02. Is there any other method I can use to reload firmware onto the UCM/Eth02 or can I send it somewhere to have the firmware reloaded?

You need another UCM/USB or UCM/ETH02 to upgrade the firmware for the UCM which failed to program
Use the Programming cable method as shown in http://www.comfortforums.com/forum4/1782.html
Otherwise please send the UCM back to the distributor where you bought the UCM to get it reporgrammmed by cable. Or if you know someone else with another UCM near you you can ask them to help reprogram the firmware

Maybe it's time the UCM/Eth implemented the concept of a "crash free BIOS" (or dual bios) as with motherboard designs.
For example have a copy of the last good firmware in flash so that if upgrade of the first flash fails then it can revert back to the saved (good) one on UCM reset. This doesn't even have to be a full firmware either just enough to start into "SAFE MODE" so that the main flashing cycle can be started again in configurator.
Possible?

In theory the firmware upgrade should allow the upgrade again even if it has failed the first time. Wew are trying to fnd out how it can be completely corrupted so that the firmware upgrade dioes not work

We have received the UCM06 (without the ETH02)
Our service staff reported that when powered up, the D9 and D10 were blinking and RDY led is on steady, none of the other leds ERR, BUSY were on
That means the UCM was working
The UCM has been upgraded to the latest version
If any frmware upgrade operation fails, especially for Ethernet when connection is lost, the firmware upgrade should be repeated without resetting the UCM or Comfort. If the UCm or comfort is reset the firmware becomes corrupted and the RDY, BUSY1, BUSY2, ERR leds will be permanent on
