The line should release automatically. You do not have to do anything.
I suspect that the phone circuits were damaged by the lightning
The board will need to be repaired or replaced. Cytech can offer a discount for replacement

If phone circuits have been damaged do I have to replace whole main board. I have Comfort I Ultra. How can I get my phone line working bypassing Comfort?

you can rewire your phone line to bypass Comfort if you suspect that the circuit is damaged

Comfort 1 was discontinued 10 years ago replaced by Comfort 2. you will have to get an upgrade if you want to replace the main board

With Comfort off the phone line is dead - what does that mean? Also the phone company say there is a line fault. Could this be because of Comfort? How do I wire to bypass Comfort?

The phone company will be sending a technician out tomorrow to check my line. I want to be sure that Comfort isn't now the cause of my inoperable dead phone line. Please advise ASAP. :(

Please see attached photo. In order to bypass Comfort should I be disconnecting the pair of blue wires and orange wires and joining them together. If so in what order?

the polarity is not important for the telephone  line
Join the 2 wires from TEL in to TEL OUT

Also it is better to restrict questions to one topic /thread otheerwise it makes it more difficult to figure out what has been answered and what hasnt and to follow the progress of the problem

:) A happy result. I joined the wires as you suggested. Another phone technician came out yesterday and discovered that the technician who had come out the previous day to address a fault that was affecting our internet usage has actually damaged our phone line. He remedied that fault and now everything is OK.
I really appreciate the help you provided in dealing with this issue.
