Looking at the DS02 door station I need to surface mount it with a rain sheild. Am I right in saying I need a MA91 instead of a MA71 back box or do I need both?

You need MA91 instead of MA71.
The complete set of parts for DS02 for surface mount are MA41 (B&W) or MA43 (mono) or MA43C (colour), MA61 Froint Frame, and MA91 Rain Shelter
