Connecting a PC to UCM/Eth2

Running Comfort II Ultra with a UCM/Eth2

Needing to upgrade the firmware of both the Comfort and KP06 (see other thread) I finally got around to connecting the PC to Comfort (or as the case turned out...I tried :( )

Looking at the instructions there are three ways to connect..

1) PC to Hub with Comfort to Hub (all straight thru CAT5)
2) PC to Comfort (straight thru CAT5)
3) PC to Comfort (x-over CAT5)

Assumption was that the Comfort (like a PC) would pick up a DHCP lease once connected, however the instructions mentioned that Comfort was preconfigured with an IP in the range of 10.0.0.51-10.0.0.60.

This was a pain as my Home Hub runs the 192.168.x.x range.

Scenario 1

Loading up ComFigurator, the instructions stated to set an IP (in the range of your choice) under Settings -> UCM Connection and then via DS manager, let the PC 'Discover' the IP address of Comfort.

It's this last bit I have trouble understanding as DS Manager is running on a PC (that already has an IP address from my Hub) and it fails, stating no connection to UCM

Scenario 2

Now I set my PC with an IP in the 10.0.0.x range, in the hope DS manager will see Comfort with it's pre-defined IP (10.0.0.51-60)
This also fails and it cannot discover the UCM

Scenario 3

This will be tried later as my x-over cable is at work.

All the LEDs look good and the Green RDY light is on. The RED LED on the ETH2 module is on and blinks occasionally and the RED & Green LEDS for comms back to the Comfort CPU are blinking furiously

Soooo I guess I am missing something here, and doing something wrong. The instructions are a little mis-leading as what IP address Comfort has and how to set it up.

The problem is in order to go through the usual check and potential firmware upgrade I need the UCM/Eth2 to get an IP and I do not have the serial interface...

So my questions are....

1) Do I use a straight thru or x-over CAT5 cable?
2) Do I plug Comfort into my Hub and will it get a DHCP lease? If not, how do I change it's pre-defined IP when DS Manager cannot see it..?
3)Do I plug Comfort into my PC and set a local IP range?? If so what settings do I use?
4) Have I missed a guide on the forums as to how to connect to Comfort for the first time?

Firstly dsmanager should be able to see the ucm irrespective of it's IP address as it is discovering devices on the network based on their MAC address. So first thing is to discover why dsmanager isnt finding it; try switching off your firewall for a few minutes to see if that then allows the discovery to work.

Once you can see the ucm in dsmanager then you set the IP address and or whether it should use dhcp or static IP via right clicking that discovered device.

Only once setup via dsmanager do you then if set the IP address to match in comfigurator.

Personally I would give the ucm a static address rather than a dynamic one.

Thanks Julian,

Just seen the comment about the different IP subnetting not being an issue in http://www.comfortforums.com/forum92/3398.html

So would you connect your PC direct to Comfort or via my Home Hub.

When I look at the Home Hub details, I cannot even see that the Ethernet port (from Comfort) is connected, but suspect that is because it doesn't yet have IP?

Do you use straight or x-over cables?

I suggest you connect Comfort and PC to your Home Hub (not sure what that is but assume it is a router or switch) with a straight cable

If you cannot see Comfort in DS Manager it means that it is physically not connected, or the UCM/Ethernet is not powered on. Check that there are leds lighted on the UCM annd the ETH submodule. When you plug in the lan cable the leds on the ETH port should show some activity

The UCM/ETH will always have an IP address even if unconfigred, so that cannot be a problem

The HomeHub is an ADSL Router - I might power cycle that (as Julian suggested).

My understanding, moving forward, is do NOT configure an IP address under UCM in Comfigurator, but use DS Manager to 'discover' it first.

As a side note - I have not changed anything with the UCM ID as its the only UCM connected, so assuming out of the box this is default to 1

All the lights on the UCM/Eth2 are on and flickering. Have seen post whereby you need to power cycle the UCM/Eth2 (as opposed to a Comfort reset) in order to kick things back into life.

It does not matter which is done first, DS manager or setting IP address in Comfigurator

The correct way  to look at it is the IP address /Port in Comfigurator Options > Settings should be the same IP address/Port assigned to the UCM/ETH DS Manager.

Not sure if that is relevant but try that and see if you can discover the IP address
also check the lan cable

Did some more testing last night but still with no luck, I am still unable to see the IP/MAC address of the UCM/ETH2 in the DS Manager.

Looking at the UCM/ETH2 module, all the lights look ok...

D10/D9 are flickering, RDY light is green, No error lights, D101 is on

However when I press SW101 on the little module card the lights on the ETH socket alternate?? Any ideas?? Is this Duplex??

One thing I did notice is that the Green LED on the ETH Socket flashes about once a second, and I would expect that to be solid??

If I press SW101, then the Yellow LED opposite the Green on the ETH Socket lights up??

When I look at the status lights on the switch, where the PC and Comfort are plugged into, when I issue the 'Refresh' cmd on DS manager I can see traffic going out - but DS manager never see's the IP/MAC come back.

I have used numerous (working) cables - suspicion lies with the LEDs on the ETH socket however as they don;t look right??

btw - I reseated the small ETH module and thats why it's not sitting on the PCB rider posts properly :)

Suspect this will require warranty testing, however the distributer doesn't distribute anymore :( Will I be ok to send this back to Cytech for checking if required?

Maybe just timing of the shot but interesting that the LED on the Ethernet port is showing no activity.

May also be worth trying to discover the UCM via DSExplorer (you can get from Tibbo website) rather than DSManager.

Hi Julian,

Correct regarding the ETH Port light - the Yellow LED never lights unless I press SW101 and then the green LED goes out.

After a module reset the Green LED comes on and pulses once a second, which doesn't look correct - especially if this is the 'link' light...


Also the intensity of the LED changes when I plug in the CAT5 (that has a switch on the other end)

The meaning of the leds from the UCM manual are

Ethernet LED Indicators

D101 - Link Status LED (Red) - This turns on when ‘active’ Ethernet cable is
plugged into the Ethernet port and blinks whenever an Ethernet packet is
received.


RJ45 connectors LEDs (Green and Amber) - dual-function Ethernet status
LEDs. The Green LED should be on when connection is established, and
blinking while connection is being established. The Amber LED should be off
in normal operation and on as error indication.

D101 should be always on
The RJ45 led should be steady green. Blinking means it is trying to establish a connection

SW101 is for programming mode and should not be used normally

I suggest you use DS Explorer and try to upgrade the firmware on the EM500
download cytech3_13.bin from http://www.cytech.biz/eth02_firmware.html?category_id=101

Note that this is NOT the UCM firmware on the base board

Superb (NOT) :( Now I think I have fubar'd the ETH2 Module by following the instructions...

Fired up DS Explorer and it discovered my UCM (only the hammer and not the Blue barrel) so there was only one line visable, with an IP address in the same subnet as my hub (weird)

Downloaded the firmware .bin file and uploaded it via DS Explorer - progress bars stayed blank, so I waited...and waited (instruction state it should only take seconds)

So I hit cancel (think this is what broke things), I the refreshed on DS Explorer and got the same 'hammer' identifyer but now with a 1.0.0.1 IP address (again, weird)

Tried uploading again and still no progress bars, so hit cancel. Now when I hit Refresh on DS Explorer I don;t see the UCM module and on the RJ45 Connector both the Green and Yellow LEDs are flickering very fast

Unplugged the module from the power and plugged back in again - still flashing RJ45 Connectror LEDs - hence suspician is it is now fubarred :( - Not happy

Thoughts?

Ok..progress..after reading the manual (doh) I found you could reset the ETH module by holding down SW101 for 7 secs on powerup (Now I know what that buttons for :P)

This brought the module back into life - DS Explorer refresh again, and can see hammer again. Perform the upload and I can now see progress - yay!

Once complete I refresh again and now see two lines (hammer and barrel). DS manager now sees the IP and I can set it - wahoo

Now and reading in Config to the PC from Comfort

Upgrading ethernet firmware by DS Explorer is normally prevented by firewalls liek Zone alarm
If you turn off the firewall, it will go ahead

Hello,
I'm currently experiencing the same connection issue with my ETH02 module.
I can get the module worked in the following states (neither with DS explorer neither with DS Manager):- RJ45 green LED blinking about twice a second (normal operation ?)- RJ45 green LED frozen when entering in programing mode (SW01 pushed down for 7 sec at start)- RJ45 green and amber LEDs blinking alternately very fast (overfilling of buffer ?)
Anyway, for none of the above states, I've succeeded in connecting to ETH02 from the computer. I tried direct connection between PC and ETH02 as well as through a switch. Also, I've tested with static IP on the computer but of course I have no idea of what is the exact ETH02 IP. From my understanding, this is not a needed information to detect with DS explorer and DS Manager? Of course, I've disabled also the computer firewall.
Nothing detected by DS explorer and DS manager. So, its not possible to upload the firmware to latest revision (3.13) as I cannot see it in DS Explorer. 
As additionnal information, the ETH02 module worked previously and was configured with a static IP. For some reasons, I've changed the subnet IP range (192.168.1.x to 192.168.0.x). I have also some mapping between MAC and IP address in the router. But as I tested the direct connection between PC and ETH02 module, I don't think it might be related to my issue.
Any suggestions to make it worked ?

Perhaps you can set your PC IP address to the old subnet 192.168.1.x fixed IP address and try pining or connecting to the ETH03 at the old IP address?

The ETH02 possibly may be faulty. The Tibbo modules tend to heat up. It may be better to buy a new ETH03 submdoule. Your UCM baseboard should still be usable, and can be upgraded to the latest UCM firmware
