LEM02B
The LEM02B Local Expansion Module with 8 Inputs, 0 Outputs can be plugged in directly to the CM9001 or SEM01C PCB via the J5 (LEM) 10 way header using 4 plastic standoffs and screws.

The LEM02B does NOT include zone shunts for selection of No End Of Line (EOL) or Double EOL Resistors. Selection of EOL/No EOL is by Comfigurator for CM9001 and SEM01C. LEM02B replaces LEM02-M2.

OP03, LEM02B, and ETH03 can be mounted on top of CM9001 PCB without obstructing the terminal blocks, reset button or LEDs as shown below

LEM01B
LEM01B is a Local Expansion Module with 8 Inputs, and 8 Outputs for CM9001

The LEM01B does not have End-of-Line shunts. The EOL properties are programmed by Comfigurator.

Unlike LEM02B, LEM01B is not mounted on top of CM9001. It is mounted on the enclosure.
If LEM01B is connected to CM9000, then End of Line resistors MUST be connected to the LEM01B zones
LEM03B

LEM03B is a Local Expansion Module with 16 Inputs, 0 outputs. It does not have End of Line shunts. The EOL properties are programmed by Comfigurator.

LEM03B is not mounted on top of CM9001. It is mounted on the enclosure.
If LEM03B is connected to CM9000, then End of Line resistors MUST be connected to the LEM03B zones.
LEM03B can be connected to CM9001 or to the last Slave ID. If LEM03B is connected to CM9001, there should be no Slaves connected.

Hello!
Your document "CM9000 vs CM9001" of Feb 2019 says (on page 3):LEM01-M2, LEM02-M2, LEM03-M2 can be used with CM9001 and CM9000Currently, I see no LEM03-M2 module among products offered, only LEM03B. Can it still be used with CM9001?The description text accompanying this product on your web says:Local Expansion with 16 Inputs for Comfort II. Only 1 can be connected to Control Panel CP9000, providing 16 expansion inputs. If the LEM03-M2 is connected, Slaves cannot be connected, limiting the system capacity to 16 inputs and 8 outputs. It seems incorrect. Shouldn't it read "If the LEM03B is connected, slaves cannot be connected, limiting the system capacity to 24 inputs and 8 outputs"?
Finally, in some third piece of documentation (not sure which one) I read that now, on CM9001, only LEM02B mounts piggy-back on top of the main board, while LEM01B mounts on the side, into the housing. I suppose this goes for LEM03B, too?

If so, how far away from the LEM connector on the main board may we put it (we're not using the standard housing, the components are being built into a control cabinet)?

Sorry    for the confusion.
LEM01-M2, LEM02-M2, LEM03-M2 can be used with CM9001 and CM9000
the suffix -M2 refers to the older design on LEMs where shunts determine if End of line reesistors should be connected to the zone contact.

The B suffix are the new design LEMs where there are no shunts, but  End of Line resistor use is determined by Comfigurator for each zone.

LEM01B LEM02B and LEM03B can  be used with CM9000 but EOL resistors must be connected (Edited )

Local Expansion with 16 Inputs for Comfort II. Only 1 can be connected to Control Panel CP9000, providing 16 expansion inputs. If the LEM03-M2 is connected, Slaves cannot be connected, limiting the system capacity to 16 inputs and 8 outputs.
The above sentence applies to both LEM03-M2 and LEM03B which both have 16 inputs and 0 outputs. However the document should be updated because since then new Firmware for CM9001 and Slave have allowed LEM03 to be used on the LAST slave. It is no longer true that LEM03 must be connected to CM9001

only LEM02B mounts piggy-back on top of the main board, while LEM01B mounts on the side, into the housing. I suppose this goes for LEM03B, too?
LEM01B and LEM03B have to be mounted on the base of the housing. LEM02B can be plugge4d in because there are 8 inputs so the size is small which allows plugging  in with a rar connector. LEM01B and LEM03C do not have the rear connector,

how far away from the LEM connector on the main board may we put it (we're not using the standard housing, the components are being built into a control cabinet)?

The LEM flat cable is about100 mm. You can extend it to about 500 mm but you  have to make up or  extend the cable yourself

Thank you for a swift reply!

So, if I understood right, we could now have a configuration of, per example, 40 zones? LEM02B on main panel, one SEM, and a LEM03B attached to it? Etc…

Correct.
When you attach LEM03B to the Slave, you cannot add more Slaves at a higher ID.
But if you need to add more zones, then you can still add Slaves, but change the LEM03 to the last Slave ID
