I know there is an Audio board you can connect onto the UCM 1 & 5, but  I already have a Network module plugged into that socket.

I want  to play message files over an external speaker, the keypad is not loud enough or good enough quality. Has anyone done this by taking a connection from the comfort keypad speaker by say a 10k resister or pot and feeding this into a mono amplifier input? OR indeed have any other suggestions about how the best way to this?  Can the main comfort speaker be turned on in a Response to play Memo messages?
I suggest you get another UCM/Audio. Comfort can accept up to 8 UCMs. The new UCM05 can plug in either a Ethernet module or Audio module or Audio on top of the Ethernet module to give maxximum flexibility

Yes I did think about that and I do have the spare Audio board, but it seems a very expensive way of extracting the audio, by having to buy another  UCM ! Is there another way? Can the main Comfort speaker be turned on when required to play a memo recording?
You can remove the speaker and connect the keypad speaker signal  to an amplifier as you have suggested. However you have to operate the speaker from the keypad. You cannot use a response to play messages on a keypad.
