Comfort Automation/ Security System Forums

Hi

I would like to connect an RIO in an outbuilding to my comfort system in the main house. Although I have a multicore cable running between the two buildings (which I could use for the +/- connections) I do not have a CAT5 or other twisted pair connection and it would be very difficult to install one. Can anyone advise me on whether I can install a wireless bridge of some sort to carry RS485 between the two buildings? I am based in the UK.

If the outbuilding is not very far it may be worthwhile to try the RIO through the existing cable even though it is not CAT5. I dont know of any easy RS485 over wireless solutions

Thanks for the suggestion; I can try that. Since my previous post I have realised/remembered that I do have one Cat5 cable running between the house and outbuilding, but it is being used as an ethernet connection. I think therefore it only uses two of the twisted pairs in the cable. Could I use one of the other twisted pairs for the RS485 signal or would it cause a problem running the RS485 signal and ethernet signal through the same cable? Again, many thanks for your help/advice.

You should be able to run the Comfort Bus (4 wires) and the network signals in the same CAT 5 cable provided you make sure that you use the correct wires, and make sure you pair the 12V/COM and KA/KB together
