I would like to alarm my garage as an extension of the house system. The garage is about 50m away from the house (at the bottom of the garden). I would like an internal siren, a keypad so I can arm/disarm and a couple of sensors.
What is the best way of doing this? Should I just run the appropriate cables (STP?) from the panel 50m across the garden or is an expansion module of some sort better located in the garage?

If you have many sensors it may be better to install a slave expansion panel with its own power supply and battery at the garage and run a CAT5 STP, as it is able to drive an internal and external siren
Otherwise you can run the additional wires for the sensors and sirens etc back to the Comfort in the main house, as well as the CAT5

I think only 2 or three sensors are needed. Can these be wired in parallel? It will be one PIR and probably 2 reed switches.

Sensors cannot be connected in parallel because that would mean that you need all to be open at the same time to generate the open condition
It is possible to connect them in series, but it is better to seperate them so each can be identified.
You should definately not have PIRs and magnetic contacts on the same zone as they need to be identified as different zone types. The door to the garage for example may be an entry door to start and entry delay
If the magnetic contacts are on the same window or door then connecting them is series may be OK

Sorry my mistake.
So series is OK for a couple of window/door contacts but need another run for PIR.
The run from contact to the panel is going to be about 50m. Will unshielded 6-core cable be ok?
The keypad will obviously be wired with FTP

Unshielded 6 core is fine for 50 meters. You can use security cable which is multistranded 6 or 8 core wire with resistance 8 ohms per 100 meters
