Velbus channel names when building responses
#1
Hi,

Started programming some velbus light circuits tonight using comfigurator. Have everything working well, delighted with it in fact, but the programming is a bit cumbersome!

For example, when programming response to turn on a velbus channel, you have to manually enter the velbus module address and the chanel number! This makes it very awkward as you ahve to remember which module address and chanel is which light, and is sure to get complicated!!

When programming x10 modules for example, having given them a name in comfigurator, you can select the device by the comfigurator name you gave it! Would it be possible to add this feature for velbus in comfigurator also ?

You would have to be able to define a name for the specific velbus channel in comfigurator, which you can not do currently, so this would have to be added.

Velbus devices can be programmed up with names using velbuslink software, but preferrably not use this in comfigurator, rather a comfort specific name.

Any thoughts ?

Regards,
Eamon

Thanks for tyhe feedback which will be taken in to account for the future

Why not use the velbus name used in the module  instead oif a completely different name which would be more confuing?

Thanks Ident,

You could use the same name as in the module. I think what I meant was that comfigurator would allow you enter the name manuall as oppossed to via scan method picking up the module name that had been programmed via velbuslink! That would suit those of us who do not use a velbus to pc interface to programme the modules directly!

IIRC The older velbus modules can be configured manually or by a PC. The newer modules are PC configuration only.

Iamusing the vmb4ry unit which does not need to be programmed using velbuslink, you set the address via the wheels! Not sure if there is any advantage to me using velbuslink, as I am getting comfort to do the logic, so as long as I can set the address of the unit, velbuslink has no benefit!!

I onyl have one vmb4ry so far, but am gatting another 5 to migrate all my x10 over now that I have the first 4 working really well. And as i am using comfort, I dont see the benefit in getting a different module type, unless someone can point out something I am missing ?

Reluctant to fork out for a velbus pc interface if I dont need one, especially as they are either rs232 or usb, and no ethernet version is available (which is a drawback with velbus as far as i can see).

would there be a possibility of integrating the channels names proposal with the next reelase of comfigurator? It does get very confusing having to map channel names to devices in your head as oppossed to comfigurator doing it for you, as it does with x10 etc

There is a \"Name\" Field in Velbus to Comfort for each channel
Isnt that field automatic filled in when you learn the Velbus network so you dont have to enter any name yourself?

Yes but it does not follow through whn building responses, you have to type in change numbers!
