Z-Wave PIR

Hi All

I have been trying to setup a everspring Z-Wave PIR  (SP103) to work outside and trigger a response that turns on several z-wave lamp / appliance modules. The plan is to cover my front drive  with the PIR and if someone comes on the drive after midnight it turns on a security light, flashes the strobe and depending on the value of a counter it triggers a number of internal lamps at different points.

I have tried to follow the instructions in the z-wave3 manual and I have ended up with the items in the UMC configuration as per the pic below.

The only bit I don\'t understand within the manual is if I have to associate the PIR with the modules I want it to control or if comfort is capably of doing this for me.

I have tried setting up the PIR as a sensor, virtual input and response and assigned a simple lamp on response in each part of comfort this relates to, I have tried running the sensor in test mode as well as live mode, the problem with live mode I get no feedback to say if the PIR has seen me, in test mode the PIR lights up a PIR

Has anyone else manage to get a z-wave PIR working in comfort?

If so can do let me had the idiots guide for achieving this and what is the best virtual input to get the functionality I described above? (I think it is response)

It is important to understnad the priciples of Zwave operation

You have created a Virtual Node. A Virtual Node allows the UCM/Zwave to receive commands and status from other Zwave nodes. Z-Wave treats the Virtual Node as a real Z-Wave node
But you need to Associate the Z-Wave Sensor to the Virtual Node

I believe you know that if you want to get a Zwave sensor or switch to control another Zwave slave Node you need to associate it with the Zwave node, otherwise there will be nothing happening.

Similarly you need to Associate the Zwave sensor to the Virtual Node in Comfort in order to make it work. Think of the Virtual Node as just another Zwave device you need to associate to

The mapping of the  Virtual Node to Responses, Virtual Input, or Counter does not matter. Whatever is mapped will be activated

The association process is also described in the manual

ok so I have now done the following and still no sucsess.

I have used the primary controller aeon stick 2 and put it in to inclusion mode, i have pressed the tamper switch on the sensor and clicked send in comfort. I did the same process with the lamp module.

I uploaded to eprom (each time) having set to the options suggested in previouse post (I finished on response) and set a response that basically turned on the module mentioned above.

Still nothing, i get the z-wave network idea, I just dont understand how / what comfort needs in order to get a PIR to send a on command and then run a response.

Has anyone managed to get a secondry controler working? I was planning to move on after setting up the PIR to a central heating boiler connection via z-wave and comfort, but this just doesnt seem to work.

Any help would be appresiated.

Firstly, test by using Primary Controller to switch on/off the virtual node. This will trigger the response mapped to the virtual node. You should get the desired effect, if programming is done properly. This also test with PIR out of the equation.

If it works correctly, have you associate the virtual node with the Z-Wave PIR correctly (as mentioned in slychiu\'s post)? The virtual node has to be \"in sync\" with the PIR state.

You mentioned inclusion in the earlier post. Inclusion is different from association.

Inclusion is adding modules into the Primary Controller\'s network. All modules/nodes have to be in same network to work, but that is the first step to what you are trying to achieve.

Association is to control another node when an event happens, such as button pressed etc. It is much like programming Z-Wave nodes to operate. As in this case, the desired virtual node has to be associated with the PIR. If association is done correctly, the PIR will trigger the virtual node whenever its state changes. Otherwise, nothing will happen to that virtual node, hence no response triggered.

Association is usually done with the primary controller. You have to refer to Primary controller\'s manual doc on how to do that, as each manufacturer has its own way of doing it.

Lastly, there is a newer UCM/Z-Wave version available on website. It is advisable to upgrade it.

I downloaded a trail version of Homeseers and did the config in there.

Does anyone know of a open source z-wave programming app?

Oh sorry should have asked, how mush to upgrade to cytech z-wave 3 module? and what benefits would I get from doing this?

Only had the z-wave module for 18 months, but I am investing lots of money in this tech.... the next thing I want to do is boiler control.

Only UCM/Zwave 3 is able to add virtual nodes and associate so what you have been trying to do would not be possible

The way to check if you have UCM/Zwave3 is mentioned here, as wel as the differences between the various types of UCM/Zwave

We can upgrade for free - just send the UCM to Cytech (in Singapore) and pay for the return transport

Have you checked if yours is already Zwave3, showing Bridge controller as in the screenshot below


If the controller type is Bridge Controller, then you already have the Zwave3 and there is no need to uograde further

Hi Ident,

I seem to have z-wave 3 bases on your last post, so it looks like I don\'t need to return so thank you for the kind offer, but should be ok.

I am still getting this wrong in my head then..... as I have the z-wave 3 does the mean I did not need Homeseers to associate the devices?

Very simple in Homeseers couple of clicks, but in comfort I think its a matter of pressing the send button at the same time as pressing buttons on the z-wave controller (Aeon stick 2 in my case) and the button on the module.

Homeseers gave me feedback to say the items where associated, and when I tested the virtual node it worked.

Comfort gives me on information that I could see to say that it has associated to a virtual node.

Just trying to work out based on this statement  \"Only UCM/Zwave 3 is able to add virtual nodes and associate so what you have been trying to do would not be possible\" can comfort 3 associate virtual nodes?


Want to be sure what tools I need to make the z-wave network function as I want to move on to more advanced stuff (new thread to be opened about central heating)
