Ultra II Installation of MPU01
#11
Can I upgrade my MPU01 while it\'s plugged into the Comfort II Main board? Will I damage anything if I connect the programming cable to the MPU01, shunt PP2 and then upgrade it via my UCM/Ethernet?

The reason for asking is if I have to dismantle my Slave board and move all the wires and stuff one more time I am surely going to break something soon.

You can upgrade the MPU01 while it is plugged in. Switch off the Comfort and remove battery before you conect the programming cable.
You will hear beeping noises on the keypads and speakers

Thanks.

PS. The strobe also goes haywire... Don\'t do this too often at night, someone might just try to \'rescue\' you.

My telephones all start ringing too so have to disconnect the TelOut first too.

And what happens next???? I realised that PP2 is underneath my Expansion board and I have to disable everything anyway.

IMHO you can leave that jumpered (I do on mine) and leave the cable attached to the MPU so long as you disconnect the UCM end (the 2 connectors).

It is recommended to remove PP2, but in most cases you can leave it connected, unless you get commuications problems on the RS485 bus

Maybe you could develop a small low profile adapter that would enable us to do a remote shunt for scenarios where the PP2 jumper is ofter obscured.

I\'m thinking basically of a short twin-wire cable with one end you can slip onto the PP2 connector (low profile no higher than the normal jumper itself) and the other end that you can short/un-short somehow;  maybe a small switch etc (I\'d even be happy twisting the wires together temporarily! Smile). Perhaps the wire would be 6 inches long say to clear any obstructions.

Personally I have the \"PP2\" problem not only for the main PCB (as I have a LEM fitted as a daughter-board) but also on my UCM05, Ethernet too (which has not only the ETH01 daughter-board fitted but also the AUD plugin on top of that too.  The UCM is a real pain to keep taking apart every time I need to flash it as the PP2 is just too obscured to be able to jumper it in situ and the connecting bars and screws fiddly.

Of course maybe redesign the boards in later prints to move the PP2 to be more accessible would be even better for new customers.

My thoughts anyway.

The PP2 header on later UCMs are accessible due to a slot on the daugherboard being added

In future hardware, we aim to remove the need for the PP2 header completely although that is not much help for you

The KT03 will be the first to be without a PP2 header. Just plug in the PP1 6 way cable to upgrade its firmware
