Ultra II Installation of MPU01
#1
I have an Ultra II that is at firmware version 5.054 and I want to install an MPU01 and then bring my system up to the latest firmware version so I can use the sunrise/sunset functionality.

I have read a lot of the posts on the forum about installing the MPU01 which seems straightforward...

http://www.comfortforums.com/view_topic.php?id=303&forum_id=16&highlight=mpu01

But then I got confused as to whether I need to upgrade my UCM firmware from it\'s current version 5.092 as per the comment in this post \"It is recommended that UCM firmware 5.178 and above be used for firmware download\" which looks a little more complicated.

http://www.comfortforums.com/view_topic.php?id=1216&forum_id=4&highlight=mpu01

Basically, what I need to know is from my current firmware versions can I just plug the MPU01 in as per the first post and then upgrade the comfort firmware from Comfigurator?  Or, do I need to upgrade the UCM firmware as well and if so do I do that from Comfigurator or with the cables (which I don\'t have) as per the second post?

Sorry if these are basic questions, but I don\'t want to get this wrong given the consequences.

Thanks,
Paul.

The earlier Comfort II boards with firmware less than 5.100 require an MPU01 plug in to upgrade their firmware (to a version higher than 5.100)

You do not need any UCM for this physical upgrade. The MPU board contains the new firmware.

However once you have the MPU board with the new firmware (currently 5.172), any further upgrades can be done using a UCM with firmware 5.178 and above. The old UCM01 cannot do this. Hence if you would like to upgrade Comfort firmware in future to newer versions you need a new UCM/232, UCM/USB or UCM/Ethernet

If you do not have a new UCM, you can also buy MPU01 with newer firmware in future to replace the one that you have. However later Comfort II PCBs without the MPU header around the U1 IC do not have this option and must use the UCM for firmware upgrades

You should request from your supplier that the MPU has 5.172 firmware installed

Many thanks. Smile

I will give it a try.

Hi,

I tried to do the upgrade of the MPU01 today.  I followed the instructions as per the first link in the psot above, powered down the unit, removed the battery, installed the MPU01 as directed and removed the J14 jumper.

When I powered the unit back on I got a communications error.  I am sure it announced communication error 33, but I may be mistaken.  It was a little noisy as all the sirens and alarms started going off.  It stated communication error on the keypad and also showed \"slave\".

I repeated the whole sequence of events to make sure the MPU01 was seated properly and in the correct location and it definitely was and couldn\'t be pushed in any further.

I got the same issues when the system was powered back up.  I removed the MPU01 and installed the jumper again and the system is normal again.

Any ideas what may going wrong?

Thanks,
Paul.

What is the MPU firmware? Check the label on the MPU IC which gives the type and version, eg ULT 5.172. There are MPUs for Slaves (SEM) which are not for the main Comfort

The MPU has to be plugged in the right way with the triagle marking aligned. It is possible to plug in 180 degrees the wrong way

When it is plugged in, what is the state of the LEDs on the Comfort PCB?

The label states ULT 5.164.  I know you advised me to ensure that it was at the latest version, but I had already bought this before I posted the topic.

Having a thorough read of the forum last night it appears others may have had similar problems and that I may need an MPU-SEM for the slave?  Although I couldn\'t find one of those at the CBUS shop where I bought the MPU-ULT.

One other issue I noted last night when setting the alarm was that the red \'Arm\' LED on the keypad did not light, despite the fact that the alarm was set in Night mode.

Regarding the state of the LEDs on the Comfort PCB can you instruct me exactly which ones to look at as this is the first time I have been inside the unit itself.  Most of my time previously has been spent on the Comfigurator side.

Thanks,
Paul.

Do you  have a old Comfort I Slave? Slave version 4.95 and older are not compatible with Comfort II, see http://www.comfortforums.com/forum78/1712.html

This needs an upgrade, not an MPU if yours is a Slave for Comfort I, but a upgrade IC01-SEM IC to replace the microcontroller IC

Please confirm what Slave you have. You can read the label on it \"SEM4.XX\" for Comfort I or \"SEM5.xxx\" for Comfort II

I figured it out.  I had put the MPU01 on the slave and not on the main board.  Don\'t tell anyone!

I coudn\'t see the IC\'s for either as they are covered by other PCB\'s.  When I investigated to look for the slave firmware as you instructed I could see that the IC I had plugged into said SEM 5.033 and the main board IC stated ULT 5.0XX (can\'t remember the exact number).

I installed the MPU01 in the correct place and it all appears to work fine now.

I assume I don\'t need to do any form of upgrade to the SEM IC now the ULT is running at 5.164?

Also, I assume I haven\'t damaged anything by plugging the MPU01 onto the SEM?

Thanks for your prompt responses, on a Sunday as well.

According to the Slave Compatibility table, SEM 5.033 will work Ok with ULT 5.164. You should not have any problems
Plugging the MPU into the slave should not damage it

Great, thanks!  Big Grin
